In 1997, with the commencement of the Sanctuary Lakes Resort project, just about the only houses in the Point Cook area were on farms. The commencement of the Sanctuary Lakes project, with its Greg Norman designed golf course and extensive lake system created a focus for the area and housing developments quickly started to spring up.

In 2002, the Sanctuary Lakes Shopping Centre opened, providing further impetus for families to move to Pt Cook.

Today more than 5,000 families call Point Cook home and each year another 1,000 families come to live in this area. The suburb is expected to be home to nearly 16,000 families by 2016.
